Mate is a popular drink in South America, especially in Uruguay. It is made from yerba mate, a caffeine-rich substance that is consumed through a metal straw called bombilla. The drink is prepared in a calabash gourd and can be shared with friends. Uruguayans consume 10kg of yerba per person yearly and consider adding sugar or preparing it with cold juice or lemonade as a crime.
